Jesse Starr

STARR, Jesse age 86 of Tampa died Monday, May 17, 2021 at his home. Mr. Starr came to Tampa in the early 80's from his native, New York.  A 1954 Fordham University graduate, Jesse enjoyed a long career as a pharmacist and co-owner of the Lawrence Pharmacy in Brooklyn, NY for more than three decades. Known in the Tampa Bay area as a film aficionado, he was one of the founders of the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival.  Honored as the Film Festival Chair Emeritus, he was presented with an honorary award, The Starr Award, for his dedication to excellence with the Jewish Film Festival. Jesse was a supporter of the Hillel's of Florida Suncoast, The Jewish Community Relations Council and taught several courses within the Tampa JCC and Federation organization as well as at the University of South Florida. A lover of travel, a good joke, herring in cream sauce and a well made meatball, what Jesse loved most was family. Jesse was a larger-than-life man who lived and loved life to the fullest. Kind, generous and compassionate, Jesse was always there as the backbone to his family. Jesse Starr you will be missed and always loved beyond measure. Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Myrna (Levine), devoted sons and daughters-in-law, Andy & Luann Starr of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Mitchell & Myrna Starr of Tampa and cherished grandchildren, Alex, Sarah, Ben, Mary Kate, Kyle and Erin. Burial was held in Ridgewood, New York. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, May 27th, 4:00 PM at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 W. Swann Avenue Tampa. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival.
