David Dolgin, D.D.S., 77, passed away after a brief illness while vacationing in Bangkok, Thailand on January 13, 2009. David graduated from Stuyvesant H.S. (New York City-1949) and Queens College (1953) where he won a New York State Regent Scholarship. While at Queens College, he served as editor-in-chief of his senior yearbook. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. As a dental technician, he discovered his love of dentistry. When David returned to New York in 1955, he met his future wife, Ann Broder and attended New York University Dental School (1960) after receiving a New York State Regent Scholarship and moved to Gainesville, Florida where he was as a dental preceptor for the public health department of Alachua County, visiting public schools and providing hygiene instruction. David opened his first practice for general dentistry in Sarasota, Florida. He later moved back to New York City with his family to attend Columbia Dental School for Periodontology (1966). David moved to Tampa and opened his practice in South Tampa and later moved to Waters Avenue. He closed his practice in 2000 and became an associate of Richard M. Levine and later Robert Michaud, until 2008. David never fully retired because he loved treating his patients. Starting in 1997, David also worked for the Metropolitan Life Dental Quality Initiatives Program, visiting dental offices throughout the country to assess and provide education about dental quality and he was a consultant in periodontics to James A. Haley Veteran's Hospital. David became a member of the American Board of Periodontology in 1973 and was active in many professional societies: Florida Society of Periodontists (president, 1977-1978), Southern Academy of Periodontology, American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, West Coast Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, Tampa Periodontal Society and Hillsborough Dental Society. He also served as an examiner for the Florida State Board of Dentistry, was president of the Hillsborough Dental Research Clinic (1993-1994) and volunteered at the Judeo-Christian Clinic and Erwin Vocational Tech program. As a Boy Scout in his teen years, he received the highest honor of Eagle Scout. David leaves his wife, Ann, of 53 years, 3 children: Sanford, M.D. (Andrea); Gary, Esq. (Wendi); and Sara Kaplan (Jonathan), a sister, Phyllis Dolgin, of New York City; and 8 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18 - 2:00 P.M. at Congregation Schaari Zedek, 3303 W. Swann Ave, Tampa 33606. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to a charity of choice.
