Dr. George Eugene "Gene" Lowry, 87, of Tampa, FL, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017.  George was born March 3, 1930 in Houston, TX to the late George and Myrtie Lowry.  He was Valedictorian at John H. Reagan High School, attended Rice University and graduated 1952 from the University of Texas. He furthered his degree at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. Post graduate education at St. Joseph's Hospital, Fort Worth; General Medical Officer OKC Penal System. Psychiatric residency at Manhattan, VA-NYU and Bellevue Medical Center. After residency, he sailed ten months aboard the SS America and SS United States as a ship's surgeon where he met the love of his life. He married Patricia Sellar in London, England, moved to Los Angeles, CA and worked as a child psychiatrist. George joined the USAF and retired in 1982 as a Colonel, Chief of Mental Health, MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. George joined the James Haley V. A. Hospital, Dept. of Psychiatry where he retired in 2011. He enjoyed training residents and medical students and helped many Veterans in need. He thoroughly enjoyed attending his writing and poetry classes, going to plays, concerts, traveling with his wife, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and his dogs.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Patricia Sellar Lowry of Tampa, FL; daughters Deborah Lowry (Joe) Tampa, FL and Amanda Lowry Sanderford (Gil) Tampa, FL; son Dr. David Lowry (Lauren), Orlando, FL; grandchildren Olivia and Reid Sanderford, Tampa, FL; Allen and Gregory Lowry, Orlando, FL; Garrett Hudson, Tampa, FL; brothers Charles Lowry (Beverly, deceased) of VA, Glenn Lowry (Joyce) of Houston, TX; Kenneth Lowry (Deany) of Houston, TX; sisters Elaine Lowry McMullen of Houston, TX; Linda May Kleeman (Louis) of Houston, TX along with many nieces and nephews. Gene was greatly loved by all who met him and will be sorely missed along with his widely known witty sense of humor.
