Harriet Leib

Harriet Ann Leib passed away on November 27, 2013 with her loving family surrounding her. She was a daughter of Benjamin and Libby Weinstein of NYC and Birmingham, Alabama. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Leib, son, Mark Leib (Elizabeth) and grandchildren Leighton (Kyle Elizabeth), Faryn, and Jeremy. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Lester Leib and by her cherished 9 year old daughter, Bonnie Sue Leib. Harriet, after graduation from Ramsey High School in Birmingham, Alabama, continued her music studies at the Birmingham Conservatory of Music and the Julliard School. She was a gifted concert pianist but said that when she met Lester Leib of Tampa, she fell in love at first sight and lost interest in performing music. She married and loved him until and after his untimely death.

Harriet attained a Masters Degree in Political Science from USF, taught government at HCC for over 25 years, and was a realtor with Smith & Assoc.She was the Deputy Director of The Museum of Science & Industry and was largely responsible for obtaining the grant that led to its construction at its current location. She was also the past President of the Tampa Chapter, National Council of Jewish Women and A.I.P.A.C., and received numerous honors and awards throughout her life.

She had a combination of great intelligence, kindness, generosity, and unyielding devotion to her children and grandchildren. She was loved and respected not only by her family, but by innumerable former students. She lived life on her own terms and withstood the terrible loss of husband and child with valor and grace. Her children thank those friends and helpers who remained close and true to the end. A graveside service was held on November 29. Pallbearers were Mark Leib, Leighton Leib, and nephews Richard Hirsch, Sol and Marty Fleischman, and Nathan Davis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for the animals she loved at PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) or Petsmart Charities.org.
