BROWNSTEIN, Herman “Hy,” 92, who resided in Tampa, FL, (formerly in Sharon, MA) died peacefully at home with his daughters, Rachel and Joanna at his side, on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. Hy was born on April 24, 1929, in New York, NY. He was the son of Bessie and Max Brownstein and the brother of Edna Austrach (deceased). As a child, Hy was an avid reader, and enjoyed learning.

Hy was a loving and devoted husband of 58 years to Shirley Zak Brownstein. He had three children, Rebecca (Becky) Brownstein and her husband, Dan Swartz of Worcester, MA, Rachel Brownstein and her husband, Clive Jaffe of Tampa, FL, and Joanna Brownstein and partner, Steve Salina, of Watertown, MA. He was the proud grandfather to Evan Swartz of San Francisco, CA, and Samantha Swartz of Worcester. Hy also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Hy earned degrees from the City College of New York and New York University. He also attended the University of Chicago. He worked for many years as a chemist and later changed careers and became a business owner, selling office furniture. He enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking and furniture making and later in life discovered a talent in painting. His paintings, mostly of the outdoors, are proudly displayed at home and in the homes of his children and family. Hy’s memorial service was private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center or American Heart Association.
