Larry Cisco Vanderpool, of Tampa, Florida, passed away at home peacefully at the age of 79.
Larry was raised in Indianola, Iowa, and went on to attend Iowa State University, where he proudly joined the Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity and began his lifelong devotion to the Cyclones.
His years in Indianola and at lowa State shaped many of the friendships and stories that stayed with him throughout his life.
After college, Larry married Gloria Vanderpool, and together they raised their children. Later in life, he met and married Darla, his wife of nearly 30 years. Larry followed several professional paths over the years, but the role he found most fulfilling came through his work with Blessman International, where he proudly closed out his career. In 2022, he and Darla retired to Florida to fulfill their shared dream of living near the beach, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying oysters on the half shell.
Larry's love of sports began early and never let up. He was a proud and vocal Cyclone fan, especially during football and wrestling seasons. His passion for wrestling started as a young athlete and deepened through the years as he supported his children and grandchildren in the sport. That connection led to years of cheering, often loudly, for Hawkeye Wrestling. You could always hear Larry: every play, every takedown, every questionable call.
Beyond the cheers, Larry carried much pride for his kids and grandkids, they were his greatest joy in life, and he loved bragging about them to anyone he met.
Larry is survived by his wife Darla; children, Doug Vanderpool and his companion Amanda, and his children Madeline (with her mother, Sarah), and Jade, Jackson, and Jayson (with their mother, Anne); Michelle (Vanderpool) Brands and her husband Terry, and their children Nelson (and his wife Olivia) and Sydney; Curtis (CW) Smith and his wife Donna Jo, and their daughter Rose; Kristin (Smith) Way and her husband Spencer, and their daughters Kennedy and Brooklyn; Amie Hale and her husband Josh, and their children Dustin, Jay (Aby), Jonce (Keely) and Alexa; Tyler Mark and his wife Stacy, and their children Harper and Max.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Jack Vanderpool, and his sister, Vicki Vanderpool.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 13th, from 2-5 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas, The Parish Hall, in Indianola, Iowa.
Friends and family are invited to attend, share stories, and celebrate Larry's life.
