Mary Smith Saad

Saad, Mary Smith died January 7, 2023 at 91 years old. She was born in Maple Shade, New Jersey, on January 12, 1931 to Walter Merle Smith and Bertha Bierman Smith. Mary grew up in Darby, PA with six siblings. At 21, she moved to Frankfurt, Germany, to work as a secretary for the US military. This experience ignited a lifelong love of travel that took her to 43 countries.

In Frankfurt, she met and married her husband of 28 years Paul Andrew Saad from Kentucky who was serving as a lieutenant in the United States Army.  Mary was a devoted homemaker, a member of the Junior League of Tampa and the Beach Park Garden Club. She later worked as a travel agent. She enjoyed gardening, painting, and the art of cooking.  For many years, she hosted “Tuesday Night Live,” a monthly gathering of women friends, and later hosted “bring-your-own-shellfish” dinners to keep the band of aging friends united. Mary cherished her independence, sweetness, her quiet faith in God, her family and dear friends, and the beauty of diverse peoples and cultures.

She is survived by her two children, Valerie Saad and Stewart Saad (Sharon); five grandchildren, Wren, Alex, Trevor, Andrew, and Mitchell; and her niece Paula Norwood. Mary was predeceased by her beloved son Paul Andrew Saad, Jr.
