Sheldon Whitman

Sheldon Whitman, 89, passed away peacefully on July 2. Loving husband of Janet (Portman) Whitman for over 68 years; proud father of Todd, Cindy (Whitman) Rubin (the late Jerry Rubin), Daniel, and Randi Whitman (Dan Daly); adored grandfather of Jared and Leigh Rubin, and Miles and Cecily Daly. Shelly was the brother of the late Garrett, his identical twin; and his late younger brother Wayne.

Shelly was born and raised in New York, graduated from Indiana University, where he met Jan, and lived in the Chicago area for many years before moving to Naples, Florida. Shelly was in the jewelry business, owning a jewelry store in Lake Forest, Illinois. Shelly and Jan have been longtime, members of Temple Shalom in Naples, acting as the official Friday night greeters.

Shelly’s love of golf and sports helped motivate his move to Florida, where he enjoyed living in a golf course community. Shelly was a kind and beloved husband, father and grandfather, and devoted to his family and many friends. Some knew him as Big Shel - who at 6’4” was a handsome figure, but deep down a sensitive and caring man. He will be enormously missed.
