Dr. Shirley P. Borkowf

BORKOWF, Shirley Phyllis 92, died on Saturday, September 30, 2023.  A long-time Tampa pediatrician, Dr. Borkowf was born in South Africa.  She earned her medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1953.  She began her career with postgraduate training at Baragwanath Hospital and the Johannesburg Childrens’ Hospital.  She then relocated to London, where she did further postgraduate work at Westminster Childrens’ Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, and Queen Square Hospital before moving to Baltimore to continue her pediatric training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, whose faculty she subsequently joined.  As a faculty member, she was in charge of the Harriet Lane Pediatric Outpatient Clinic.  She moved to Tampa in 1973 to join her family.  Dr. Borkowf’s daughter, Margot Levin, and her brother, Dr. Harold I. Borkowf, predeceased her.  She is survived by her sister, Dr. Kailie Shaw of Tampa, and many other members of the Shaw and Borkowf families.  Dr. Borkowf was beloved by the generations of patients whom she cared for, many of whom brought their own children to see her.  She will be missed. Services for Shirley will take place graveside at Gan Shalom Cemetery on Monday, October 2nd, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Am.
