Obituary

January 3, 1936 – August 12, 2020

Arlene Soberman passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in the evening on August 12, 2020 at age 84. A resident of Tampa, Florida at the time of her passing, Arlene spent the vast majority of her life in New York and New Jersey.  She was born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn to Gladys and Irving Meistrich, and grew up as an only child surrounded by a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. She loved singing and dancing, and she considered a show business career before pursuing a career as an administrative assistant. She was introduced to the love of her life, Marvin, by his cousin Alex Soberman, who was a staff dentist at the Brooklyn VA dental clinic where she worked.Arlene and Marvin fell in love and eventually married on September 2, 1956 at the Twin Cantors in Brooklyn before moving to Fort Huachuca, Arizona for Marvin’s military service. They were married for almost 64 years. After his service, Arlene and Marvin returned to Brooklyn, New York where they welcomed their sons Mark and Stuart into the world and lived happily in Beach Haven until they moved to Randolph, New Jersey in 1972, when she learned to drive. Once in New Jersey, she cultivated relationships with friends thatendure to this day, almost 50 years later. Arlene loved to cook and entertain, and she and Marvin led a life centered around family and friends, each occasion made even more special by their presence. They enjoyed great food and wine, travel, art and music, and they shared those passions with their sons and their families. Arlene was a caring and loving mother, but she also instilled discipline in and worked to support her family. She was smart, funny, caring, and generous, with a healthy dose of sarcasm. She was always ready to share her thoughts on politics, public events, and a variety of other subjects, and to do anything for family and friends. She was a loving and involved mother, and she especially loved being a grandma and cherished her close relationships with grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Marvin, in May 2020 (https://www.segalfuneralhome.com/obituary/Marvin-Soberman), and by her parents Gladys and Irving Meistrich. She is survived by her sons Stuart (Lori) and Mark (Candace), and her grandchildren, Rachel, Jake, Daniel, and Hannah. She leaves behind an everlasting legacy of caring, love, kindness, and laughter, and she will live forever in our hearts and memories. May her memory be a blessing.
